A NEW CAREER
Friend Ted:
By the business we are doing these nites one wd never be let to suspect that there is a world conflagraton going on but nevertheless such is the case. The rope is up every nite of the wk except Monday and then such is the kind of lug I am working for that he wants to put the rope up and hang himself from it because one nite of the wk maybe four tables do not get occupied by people buying wine. This is the same guy that I recall distintly six months ago if 4 tables did happen to be occupied he wd spend $40 phoning his girl on the road with some band that business was terrific. Now when he gets a bad nite he thinks it is brutal.
I guess you are wondering why I am giving you these physical details. Well I do not blame you because why should you give a good God damn about some crib in Chicago even if I do happen to be working there. Of course I always give a damn if it is you and I understand you are going to be booked into the N.Y. Paramount in a couple wks and whoeverâs record is tops I hope you break it and am sure you will. But of course why you should care if we do 8000 or 800 except that I have a little propositon that may arouse yr interest and it is this.
I will tell you all about it and how I happen to have my interest aroused. It is owing to those Monday nites. My boss is known by the name Harry Bonbon which is a mob nickname he got from the mobsters not because of him liking chocolate bon-bon candy but his name was Burnbaum and they had a mobster with an impedima in his speech and the closest he could come to the name was Bonbon. That is one vertion. However that is an good as any and I just wanted to tell you his name Harry Bonbon. So these Monday nites he just sits there chewing on the end of his cigar (personally I wish he would chew on the lit end but no such luck) and he counts the empties and then I see him looking around and he will call a headwaiter and point to some lights and say âSave thatâ and the headwaiter will have to go out and turn off the light. He keeps doing that until by the time it gets to be 12 or half past the place is like a black out over France. It is a very handy thing for the out of town spenders that have some local mouse out for the first time and want to find out if she has a wooden leg. It also is a very fine thing in favor of the light finger gentery and I told Harry one Monday I said in case he was interested over
